St Niklaus to Gruben

The three of us woke up early, waited a few minutes for breakfast, which didn’t officially begin until 8am, then Mike and I went up the Rothorn while Kent tried to find a way to ship his climbing gear back to the states on a Sunday.

Obergabelhorn 4063m / 13,330', ZinalRothorn 4221m / 13,848', and Weisshorn 4506m / 14,783' from Sunnegga 2288m / 7506'

By the time Mike and I got back to the room, Kent had talked to Danielle at the Hotel Alpenrose, who had agreed to ship Kent’s gear back to the states.  All three of us then headed up the Schwarzsee lift to the Klein Matterhorn.

Hörnli Hut is on the ridgeline in the lower middle section of the picture
This is the best picture I have of the route Kent climbed - straight up that ridge

Hörnli Hut is clearly visible in this picture of the south face

This picture shows the entire hiking and climbing route from Schwarzsee to the summit

The top of the Schwarzsee lift is just out of picture at the right.

From the top we could barely see the white of Mt Blanc, about 50 miles distant.  I took a series of pictures for a panorama.  This one took hours to fix, as Kent moved a little during the shots, and the panorama software did not like lining up the snowfield.  However, I love the shot, and Kent does too, as this picture certainly tells a story, as Kent points to the Matterhorn he climbed the day prior.

The Europaweg trail, the final section of the Haute Route that runs from St Niklaus to Zermatt, runs along the treeline most or all of the length of the Mischabel Range

Hotel Alpenrose is on the right center
Paul and Ray's room with the Matterhorn view is facing us, on the third floor (that would be the second floor in Europe)
Mike, Kent and Dusty's room was on the right side of the hotel facing the river

We headed back down to Zermatt to find Paul, somehow missing him at the train station only to have him find us walking back towards the hotel.  We were now 3/3 for missing people at the train station only to have them find us minutes later.

We had beer, then went back to the hotel to check in, and eventually missed Ray at the train station, only to have him find us minutes later.  In fairness, three trains arrived within minutes of each other this time, and there was no real telling which train was which.

We had more beers, then bought groceries for our hike at the Coop, then went back to the hotel for dinner.
