Martigny to Montreux

We visited the supermarket for breakfast.
We'd seen signs for the Renoir exhibit in Martigny all up and down the Rhone valley since we arrived in Switzerland.  Kent had already spent Thursday night in Martigny while I was in Champex.  We decided to see the Renoir exhibit and (re-) visit the Roman ruins.

9:05am

I bought a drawing of the Alps and the Rhone valley that showed the entire Haute Route - you can see the map in the bottom right corner of this picture. Someday maybe I'll get it properly framed and hung.  Not too likely, since I still have a similar map from my 2005 European trip that shows the Alps and that train trip, and that map still sits rolled up in my garage.

More taxidermy at the butcher shop than you see in the States...

We said goodbye to the Hotel Popcorn and Saas Fee and headed back to the Rhone Valley.  It was supposed to rain the next few days so we were in no real hurry to leave the sunshine behind.

10:14am

We arrived in Martigny and headed to the TI.  There were two cheap hotels in Martigny and Kent had already stayed in one, so we picked the other one.

12:31pm

The rainy view from our room, looking southeast toward the French border and Chamonix.  While we had to walk to the other end of town to get to our hotel,  Kent says the room was much bigger than his room from the first Martigny hotel.
The intersection below appeared to be the busiest and loudest in town, but the windows kept out most of the traffic noise.

Checking out the Roman ruins

No, Ceasar didn't live here.

2:23pm

The Renoir exhibit was at the Fondation Pierre Gianadda musuem.  The main floor of the museum contains Roman artifacts, which were interesting but not spectacular if you've already seen lots of Roman exhibits like both Kent and I have.

The Renoirs were in the 'basement', and the collection was stunning.
I expected the museum to have perhaps 10 or 20 paintings and then a collection of other stuff to fill up space.
Instead there were over 100 Renoirs, and they stunning.
One of the finest exhibits I've ever seen.
Perhaps the most memorable was Pink and Blue.
While they didn't have his most famous pieces from L'Orangerie, they more than enough.

3:28pm

The Roman Arena

3:58pm

Somehow Kent managed to find a cafe that served wine in Martigny...(that's Kent under the awning)

We had dinner at Le Loup Blanc

Kent had Syrah and Le Cheesburger, I had Rosti and 1/2L of beer
