I've wanted to hike the John Muir Trail for pretty
much my entire life. I've seen pictures of Garnet and Thousand
Island
Lake2013/whitney/twhitneyportal.jpgs and wanted to see them with my own
eyes. While my
goal is to complete the entire JMT, at best I'll be able to do it in
sections. In 2009
I was able to dayhike about 24 miles of the JMT from our campsite at
Tuolumne Meadows campground
to our campsite in Upper Pines in Yosemite Valley. In subsequent
years I've hiked the stretches of the JMT around Tuolumne
Meadows. If I'm able to hike the JMT from Red's Meadow to
Tuolumne Meadows, I will have hiked all of the JMT between Happy Isles
and Red's Meadow.
It is nearly impossible to get permits to hike the JMT starting in
Yosemite park. The luddites at the Yosemite Conservency use a
state of the art device called a 'fax machine'
to receive permit requests, resulting a huge amounts of needless work
for their staff and about a 2% success rate for anyone trying to get a
permit.
Getting a permit to hike the JMT starting in Red's Meadow is somewhat
easier. Inyo National Forest issues 6 permits per day to hike the
JMT north of Devil's Postpile, and holds an additional 4 permits per
day available for walk ups that are handed out starting at 11am the day
prior to the hike. I was able to secure only one permit for the
JMT for our trip in advance, but I was able to get 5 permits for the
Pacific Crest Trail aka High Trail. I was able to get another
JMT permit about 2 weeks prior to the hike when someone cancelled, but
I
still needed a third permit to hike the JMT. About a week prior
to the trip I decided to camp out at the Mammoth Mountain Visitor
Center very early Saturday morning to get the third permit since that's
the trail
I really wanted to hike.
