Day 7 - Füssen

Saturday morning we left Salzburg and went to Füssen.  We had a bit of a misadventure when Dusty misplaced his passport.  He backtracked all the way to the hotel before finding it in his luggage.  Mental note – do not use your passport as a bookmark.  Dusty lost his passport holding privileges and forfeited the passports and Eurail passes to Kathy for safekeeping.

We arrived in Füssen at 3pm instead of 1pm due to the passport mishap.  Füssen is a very small tourist town at the end of the Romantic Road in Bavaria.  While the two main castles are near town and easily accessible by taxi, I wanted to see some other churches and castles in the area if possible that are only accessible if you have a car.  I wasn’t able to locate a reasonable priced vehicle on my own – Hertz wanted over 300 euro for a vehicle that would hold 6 for 2 days, and the only rental car facility in Rick’s book said they don’t take reservations.  We stayed at the Aldstadt Hotel zum Hechten, where the rooms were spacious and the restaurant and breakfasts were great.  The owner of the hotel was able to rent us a van, which we went to pick up at 5pm Saturday.  Since we knew were would arrive after the car rental office closed at noon Saturday and leave at 7am Monday before it reopened, Mr. Tramp took care of the whole thing – he had the keys ready when we got there, he gave me a ride to the Volkswagen dealership to pick it up, and had me pay him for the van and leave it at their hotel when we left - truly fantastic service.  The van itself was a 9 seater VW Transporter, not quite as large as the van we’d had in Italy 2 years ago.

We ate at our hotel's restaurant, where the specialty is pike.  They served a huge portion, and it was pretty good!
