We got up early – 7am – had breakfast, and caught the bus at about 8:15 to the train station. Once there we found the signs indication the trains – or more correctly, the ‘workers’ who run them (I’m using the term ‘workers’ very loosely here) - were on strike Sunday morning from 8:16 to 12:16. This was a huge disappointment – we’d checked Rick Steve’s website for strikes before we left (June 29) but this strike was announced on June 30. Decided to reverse plans and go swimming early. Found a different beach – the ‘tourist’ beach – Robby, CJ, and I swam for about 1-1/2 hours. CJ swam out all the way to the breakwater with me.

Walked over to the port, up the hill, had lunch, and went back to the train station at about 12:45. A train full of sweaty people was waiting to leave on a standing room only train. We got to Pompei at about 1:15. Everyone saw the Forum, the Forum Baths, and the Villa de Misteri. At this point everyone else headed back to the hotel while CJ and I blitzed Pompei to see everything possible. CJ & I found most of the best sites, and a few surprises not on the maps. We finally found the Stadium and I got my pictures of the Stadium with Vesuvius in the background, like in Pink Floyd at Pompei. We were both exhausted by then. We dragged our way back to the entrance, then the train station, then the train. CJ nodded off on the train. Without too much trouble we caught the bus back to the hotel. The rest of the crew had not found the machine to validate your ticket before boarding their train, and had spent the entire ride in fear of being ‘caught’. Robby spent the afternoon swimming in both the pools at the hotel. Later we had dinner and called it a day.
