Day 6 -  Tuolumne Meadows to Upper Pines

Wednesday morning we said goodbye to Amy, Ray, Annabelle and Sophie.  They headed down to the Ahwanee, and we took a day trip to the East Side. This was all new territory for Kathy and the kids.  We stopped at the Tioga Gas Mart for snacks, then drove out to Bodie.  At the end of the bumpy dirt road we encountered a long line of cars waiting to pay the entrance fee to Bodie.  Incredibly it took perhaps 15 mintes to pay to get into a ghost town.

It was very windy and not terribly pleasant.  It was warm enough, but the wind got old quickly.  We only stayed an hour or so.  I was amazed that Kathy, who has never expressed any interest in anything history related, was more interested in Bodie than the kids - she found peering into the old homes fascinating.

We drove back to the Tioga Gas Mart for another snack, then went to the Whitmore Pool near Mammoth Lakes.  The water was warm, but the stiff breeze coming off the mountains made the swimming rather chilly. We stayed for perhaps an hour, then headed back to Tioga Gas Mart for the third and final time for dinner and groceries.  This was the closest thing to civilation we'd seen in days.  The restaraunt in the Tioga Gas Mart, the Whoa Nellie Deli, is probably the best food within a hundred miles of Lee Vining.  It has a cult like following.  I will never forget my first meal there - Seared Ahi.

Wednesday night was very cold once again.  Fortunately we had doubled up the air mattresses, which kept us much warmer and much more comfortable.
