El Granada to Whitefish

We've got enough frequent flier miles to get a family of four just about anywhere.  The problem is getting everyone to agree where they want to go.  We've driven to the Tetons, Yellowstone and Glacier four times in 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2016, but that's a long drive and I'm tired of driving - I swore after 2016 I wouldn't drive to Glacier again.  I'm also somewhat tired of the Tetons and Yellowstone because they are both very touristy compared to Glacier.  I asked the family if they wanted to fly to Glacier for a week and they loved the idea.

There are only two places you really want to stay in Glacier National Park:
- the Village Inn at Apgar, where every room has a lakefront view of Lake McDonald, and the
- Many Glacier Hotel where you are surrounded by amazing views of lakes, granite, glaciers and often grizzlies on the nearby mountains.

I started looking for hotel rooms for the summer of 2019 in August 2018 right after I got back from France, but I was already too late to get two rooms for a week without room changes.
I could get the most rooms for the third week of August 2019, so I looked for flights for that week.
You get horrible value trying to use frequent flier miles trying to get to Glacier, so I ended up buying airfare instead on the only direct flight from SFO to Kalispell on United.
Flying out on Friday and returning the next Saturday saved a lot of money versus flying back on Sunday.
I never was able to find a room for Friday night, so Kathy and I both used free nights from our Marriott cards to spend the night in TownePlace Suites in Whitefish
We'd stayed in Kalispell a few times, there was nothing to see there and I'd heard good things about Whitefish.

CJ recently bought a Miata
He drove down to El Granada so we could all drive to SFO together Saturday morning.
He and Robby went for a drive to go shopping in Half Moon Bay...

Every time we've come to Glacier we've stopped at the Amazing Fun Center for bankshot basketball and the maze.
We decided to play basketball today and we'd try the maze tomorrow

After a lazy morning we got back to the Amazing Fun Center for the maze.
We obeyed all the rules except "no running".
The maze has 4 towers, you need to get your bookmark stamped at each tower, then find either the easy or hard exit - we choose hard, of course.
We decided not to use the hints on the walls.

I followed CJ to one tower, followed Robby to another, and soon had 3 of the 4 towers.
After 2-3 attempts I finally found the hard exit and won!
CJ had all 4 towers but gave up trying to find the hard exit as soon as I won, and Kathy gave up after I won with only 3 towers.
Only Robby kept going until he found the hard exit.

For the first time ever, we did not see mountain goats very close to the Hidden Lake trail.
It was a pretty chillly morning.

I took pictures and video for perhaps 20 minutes.
Finally I quit taking pictures and started back down the trail.

A mama and baby goat keeping out of the hot sun.
The rest of the family stayed with these two for quite a while waiting for me to catch up before finally giving up and heading down the mountain.

We were originally going to eat lunch in the parking lot, then realized this would be really selfish since everyone wanted those spots.
We drove a little way down "The Shining" east side of Logan Pass and had lunch in a gorgeous pullout instead.

Grinell Glacier overlook
The trail was so busy I didn't feel the need to carry bear spray, but decided I'd feel stupid getting eaten by a bear with my bear spray in my pack.

The mama and baby mountain goat went down the cliff around Robby and me.  The guy in back of the goats basically chased them.  I tried to keep out of their way.

The weather looked unsettled and it was supposed to rain later.
We decided it was a good day to read and do nothing.
We spent many lazy hours reading and watching bears.
We watched a pair of grizzly bears on the side of the mountain play and eat for hours through binoculars.
The weather was unsettled but it didn't rain until the evening.

We went to dinner at the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn.
The menu and service were much, much worse than the last time we were here - nothing better than burgers, clearly all frozen food.. they weren't even trying.

Suddenly, it turned from nice to gorgeous, quickly on its way to stunning...

I saw a couple coming down the trail and asked them if they'd seen any large mammals.
They replied that there were two humans coming down the trail a few minutes in back of them, but they'd seen no other large mammals.
After a few minutes I saw the other humans, then I knew I had Iceberg Lake to myself.
It quickly became magical...
In silence I approached the lake hoping to see wildlife.
I didn't see anything larger than a chipmunk, but it was a lovely morning in the mountains.
Once I heard rocks crashing somewhere into the lake but I couldn't see what happened.

It only took a few minutes to determine that this chipmunk had no fear at all of people.
He climbed on my shoe looking for food.

I tried to set up my camera on my mini tripod to get a proper picture of myself.
I had the entire upper trail and lake to myself for about 30 minutes before my first company arrived and broke the silence - a couple.
I asked them to take pictures of me instead.
They waded into the lake and took lots of pictures of themselves, but they were nice enough and not too loud.
It was just the three of us for perhaps 10 minutes before another group arrived.
Then more groups started arriving and it was no longer silent.
I warned the next few groups that the chipmunk was extremely agressive but it didn't seem to help much, people aren't very good at listening.

I guess they really did go to college.
